Health Talk :-Today I want to talk about one bad habit of our routine life which is DRIVING after Driking.
For today's young people, the hardest compromise often lies between being social and being responsible.
To be social, drinking alcohol is often the order of the night, but to be responsible, the ability to drive must be held in high regard.
Drunken driving is a problem in any community, but, in Vermont, there are added dangers because of the rural environment and limited public transportation, both of which put added distance between a drinking venue and home.
Though drunken driving is an issue for all age groups, statistics show that the highest percentage is between the ages of 21 and 24.
This is not surprising given that "newly legal" drinkers are more likely to begin going to bars rather than drinking at a friend's house.
This is also the age group in which binge drinking is most common. Therefore, it is especially important for parents of young adults to make sure they are being responsible.
The following are some suggestions that parents can recommend, as to how a young bar patron can avoid drinking and driving.
Make sure there is a designated driver.
Delegate a new designated driver for each outing. Make the position more appealing by having all the passengers chip in for the DD's dinner before the night out.
Use taxis or other transportation services.
Make sure to have the telephone number of a few different cab services on hand in case too much alcohol has been consumed. A night out can also be made more fun if a limousine driver is hired beforehand.
Purchase a breathalyzer, which can be fun to bring on a night out. It can also be life saving. Use it to find out who is under the legal limit to drive. If you find out that no one is, then it is time to find alternate transportation.
Set limits before you go out. Bring only enough money to purchase a couple of drinks. This will not only limit the amount you drink, but also prolong the time it takes to finish a drink. As an added bonus, it will also help to save money.
Make sleeping arrangements beforehand. Designate one house as a home base. This should be a place where water, food and sleeping accessories can be found. It is also a good place to leave cars and collect car keys, so that only a designated driver can leave the bar.
Learn to negotiate with your friends. If you notice a friend who has had too much to drink or is attempting to drive while intoxicated, calmly, but insistently, convince them otherwise.
Above all, set a good example,it could save a life.
